This square is hung on the Blacksmith’s Shop building at Roscoe Village, a restored 19th century canal era town that preserves the area’s Ohio & Erie Canal era heritage. This is a sterling example of how true barn quilts are carefully selected to signify local community history.

This pattern represents an applique quilt that was pieced and hand-quilted by Hannah Hays in the 1830s. The Hays family came from Massachusetts and arrived in Roscoe Village on a canal boat. They settled in nearby Tiverton Center, Ohio and where they built the area’s first wood frame house in the same year. The original quilt that inspired this barn quilt is still kept in that house today
